Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

In September 2000 the Government introduced the Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) where, based on a sliding scale, students whose parents have an annual income of below £30,000 are eligible for a weekly payment of up to £30 per week during term time.

Students who are eligible for this allowance are required to complete an Application Form and submit it to EMA, along with details of family income.  If their application is successful they are then required to sign a Learning Agreement.  Should attendance fall below 95%, or the student fails to meet course requirements for no valid reason, the EMA can be stopped until the situation improves.

Application Forms for the EMA will be distributed during the Summer Term of Year 11.

Travel Allowances

Providing students live within the Borough, students may apply for a travel allowance from the Local Authority if the school is more than 3 miles from their home address.

Students living outside Barking and Dagenham should apply to their own local Authority.
