What are the benefits of staying on at school?

Many students choose to enter the Sixth Form because they wish to continue their education in a familiar environment and with those they have known for some time.  For all students the Sixth Form is a chance to start afresh, but within a firm and familiar framework of support.

Life as a Sixth Form student is a new and challenging experience.  You are given progressively more autonomy and independence and are encouraged to take greater responsibility for your own learning, self-motivation and personal organisation.

To help you, you will have a tutor who may or may not teach you, but who will act as your academic mentor and discuss your progress with you regularly and advise you on good study and working practices, helping you to plan and organise your work so that you achieve your very best.  Smaller classes provide an opportunity for more discussion and a closer relationship between you and your teachers.

Achieving the correct balance between work and other activities is important.  It is hoped that every Sixth Form student will widen his or her interests and develop talents and abilities that he or she may have.  Students are therefore encouraged to take an active role and accept responsibilities within the school and local community.  By developing your interests and personal commitment you will emerge from the Sixth Form as a more confident and mature individual, finding that employers and colleges/universities are as much interested in your personal qualities as in your academic qualifications.

Students are encouraged to support younger pupils, and many act as classroom support, together with assisting in Primary Schools and local organisations associated with Senior Citizens and the handicapped.  Such activities contribute towards the "Skills for Life" Award.

The ASDAN Gold and Universities Award is offered to students, providing them with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their ability in a range of skills and personal challenges through student based activities.  This award is valued by both employers and tutors in Further/Higher Education, providing students with an important complementary qualification in Wider Key Skills.

Experience of work is an important and integral part of all Sixth Form students study programmes.  Every student has the opportunity to participate in a work placement in commerce or industry, with all placements being closely monitored to ensure maximum benefit.  'A' Level and Advanced Vocational students follow an "Insight into Management" programme whilst Vocational course students are encouraged to seek Work Experience placements.

Whilst some students choose to leave school and pursue their studies at other establishments, the majority choose to continue their studies in a familiar environment where they know they will have the full support of an experienced and caring staff.
