AS Biology

Biology is currently the area of science
experiencing the most rapid growth. Biologists study living organisms both in
the laboratory and in their environment. Recent areas of expansion include both
genetics and biotechnology. Those who study Biology could progress to careers in
Medicine or Environmental Studies as well as Plant or Animal Studies.
If you enjoyed your study of topics such as Inheritance, Evolution, Plants,
Environment and Hormones and Nerves then this may be the course for you.
What
does the course involve?
There are 3 components studied as follows:-
Unit 1 - Molecules and Cells
This involves further study of DNA and chromosomes; Enzymes; Cells
and Organelles; and Protein and DNA synthesis.
Unit 2 - Exchange. Transport and Reproduction
This involves study of Gas Exchange, Adaptation, Transport, Sexual Reproduction
and Placental Development.
Unit 3a - Energy and Environment
We study human nutrition, energy flow, recycling
of nutrients as well as energy resources, and human influences on the
environment.
Unit 3b - Practical Investigation
Students perform a practical investigation which is assessed by their teacher.

Requirements
You will need 2 grade C passes at GCSE Double Science.
Progression
Opportunities
You will be able to move onto A2 if you succeed in
passing AS and this can lead to a variety of careers in Medicine, Pharmacy,
Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology and related
disciplines as well as the opportunity for study at degree level at University.
