BTEC Sport and Exercise Science @ EB

The BTEC National Certificate in Sport and Exercise Science is comparable to two A levels in curriculum time and the National Award is equivalent to one A level. It is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills required for success in current and future employment in the sport and related industries. In particular it prepares a student for roles that require a scientific background, or for entry to appropriate undergraduate degree programmes.

Course content

A total of 12 units are studied, with each unit consisting of between 2-4 assignments. Units taken include:

  • Fitness Testing
  • Physiological Factors in Sport and Science
  • Sport Massage
  • Exercise Health and Lifestyle

  • Sports Injuries
  • Practical Sport Performance
  • Technological Developments in Sport
  • Sport Industry Experience

All units carry either internal or external assessment and are criteria referred, based on the achievement of specific outcomes. To achieve a pass grade for a unit students must have met all the basic assessment criteria outlined in the unit specifications.

Whilst the qualification is not as prestigious as A level it is a level 3 qualification, comparable to the academic content of AS and A2. It is a course which provides good opportunity for students to study/research independently and is very much aimed at those preparing to study or follow a career within sports and exercise.

Students taking this course should consider Biology, Chemistry or Mathematics as one of their other option choices and will to develop strong, independent research skills.

Outline of the course

BTEC National Awards are practical work related courses. This course is designed for learners who are preparing for future employment in the sport and related industries. In particular they prepare learners for those roles that require a scientific background.

The Level 3 BTEC National qualifications are designed to:

  • develop learners ability through effective use and combination of the knowledge and skills gained in different parts of the programme
  • provide specialised studies directly relevant to the sports and exercise science profession in which learners are working or intend to seek employment
  • provide practical understanding of the skills required to develop careers within sport and related industries
  • develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for success in working life

Assessment There are 6 units.

They are assessed throughout the two years with no final exams.

Careers and further study

BTEC National awards are valued by employers and by Higher Education institutions. If you want to get a job straight away you could work in a wide variety of sport related areas. You could go on to university or college to do more specialist study in sports therapy, coaching or a range of related courses. Being trained in sports and exercise science can enhance your life outside education.
